The Lakes ...
In
2005 we purchased a new lake (approximately 2 acres) and several
acres of woodland adjoining our property. It's an idyllic spot
in a nature reserve, the lake is spring fed and up to 30 ft
deep. It has a native population of Carp, Tench, Perch and Roach.
In December we re-stocked the lake with 2 tonnes of carp from
3 Kilos (7 Pounds) to 20 Kilo (45 Pounds), Tench up to 3 Kilo
(7 Pounds) and a few Pike. Only a small number of guests
who stay at Maquignon are allowed to fish this lake, it's only
for the experienced angler and children must not be left alone
by the lake due to its isolation and depth of water.
The lake is an old quarry from 70/80 years ago when the operator
quarried for 'Terre Blanch" used by the pharmaceutical
and beauty product market. It was abandoned due to the underground streams flooding the excavation.
You
can sit in complete tranquility to fish and surrounded by
wildlife: watch the woodpeckers flying by and the kingfishers
swooping for fish. It's a wonderful, special place, the pictures
do not do it justice.
We plan, in 2006/2007, to carry out landscaping to provide a pathway
all the way around the lake, make it easier to access and clear
overgrown areas. For the bird watchers it's an idyllic place
and an opportunity to view the many species in their own unspoiled
habitat. There are also deer and a large variety of other wildlife in the woods.
From time to time we will be adding photos of our progress.
